Real-Time Decred Price Chart (DCR to USD)
Decred (DCR), a shortened form of 'dentralised credit', is a cryptocurrency that was originally launched as just the mainnet in 2016, before the first mining protocol was released in early 2017. It has been touted as 'Bitcoin 2.0', as it is based on the underlying blockchain of the popular original coin, but incorporates a number of advanced features that are meant to improve upon the first generation of digital currencies.
The value of Decred rose rapidly after the launch of its mining protocol and experienced a large boom and bust in 2017 just as most other digital currencies were only starting the initial rise into the market-wide 2018 crypto boom. After this first initial bust, it rose and fell in value again alongside most of the rest of the cryptospace. Unlike most other coins, it remained at an elevated price level after the end of the 2018 crypto price boom. It is now a top 40 cryptocurrency by market cap.
The defining features of Decred are a hybrid Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) system, where Proof of Work is used to confirm transactions and Proof of Stake is used for governance, and its incorporation of the Lightning Network to facilitate small transactions off the blockchain at a more rapid rate than most other major digital currencies that have incorporated this protocol.
