Waves (WAVES) is a cryptocurrency and peer-to-peer exchange platform launched in 2016. The platform allows for the development of decentralized applications and Smart Contracts, and the associated wallets can store the WAVES coin used to pay for transactions, other digital currencies and even some fiat currencies. Users also have the ability to create their own unique cryptocurrencies based on the underlying blockchain and store these unique coins in their supported wallets.

The value of Waves was relatively flat after its initial launch, but it saw a period of elevated prices in early 2017. The coin underwent a relatively muted spike and fall compared to most other digital currencies during the 2018 crypto boom and bust, and remained at elevated levels while most other coins dropped more dramatically. Following this period of elevated price levels, it subsequently declined to levels closer to its 2017 highs. It is now a top 40 cryptocurrency by overall market cap.
