What is Theta (THETA)?

Theta is a smart contract-based service that enables a content creator to show videos to people around the world without relying on their own bandwidth. The cryptocurrency has a strong decentralized application, making it possible to stream video data to users everywhere without the involvement of any centralized server. Instead, users share their system resources to earn the TFUEL token for their efforts.

The current THETA price today is $ 0.138184 at Jul 9, 2026 apiece, but the coin reached its current maximum value of $ 15.72 on in 16.04.2021. This price spike occurred due to an inaccurate belief that Grayscale Investments registered a trust meant to invest into the Theta network.  

The total supply of THETA is fixed at 1 billion, while the secondary coin, TFUEL or Theta Fuel, will start at 5 coins for every THETA, and will slowly increase over time. Every THETA token holder received 5 TFUEL during the mainnet launch on March 15th of, 2019. This launch created a circulating supply of coins that will fuel the streaming transactions over time. 

A Brief History of the Theta Network

Theta got its start on Medium in 2017. The project was founded by Mitch Liu and Jieyi Long. Coins first went for sale in January 2018 as ERC20 tokens on Ethereum. The coins were later transferred to their own mainnet where ERC20 token holders could transfer their coins to native coins on the Theta network at a 1:1 ratio.

Theta established a peer-to-peer network known as EdgeCast and enabled data users to record live video and transcode video in real time. In July 2021, Theta released its Mainnet 3.0, adding smart contract capabilities to its network.

The Theta network relies on the well-known proof of stake consensus mechanism but with a twist. New nodes are approved by a small number of corporate partners like Samsung and Google that serve as enterprise validator. These reliable partners work as a security measure for the network while enabling it to operate in a somewhat decentralized nature still and maintaining a decent level of fault tolerance, making it superior to more centralized solutions. 

The network also has another layer of security through special users known as Guardian nodes. These special Theta currency holders seal blocks of transactions and serve as proof of stake members of the blockchain network.
